Abstract:
The ongoing requirement for improved steel properties, particularly for the automotive industry, has led to development of a range of new steels with quite complex microstructures and property packages. In our work we have taken a multiscale approach to developing an improved understanding of these steel types. This has recently included extensive use of atom probe tomography to unlock the atomistic variations in the structure. This lecture will examine the thermomechanical development of these new steels focussing on their microstructure evolution supported by advanced characterisation.
