Abstract:

Based on the fundamentals of the origination and appearance of fractures the influences of material, design and manufacture on failure mechanisms in aircraft components are discussed. Special interest is devoted to detrimental operative conditions (mechanical, thermal and corrosive overload). This is demonstrated by case studies from different components:

- Main landing gear of a passenger jet

- Wing fastening pin of a military jet

- Turbine blade in a jet engine

- Verification of overheating in a turbo-prop engine

- Pin of the engine suspension of a cargo aircraft

Experimental methods like fractography, metallography and microanalysis will be applied to evaluate the cause of the failure.
