In Situ TEM Growth, Manipulation, and Properties of Nanostructures
In situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) combines the atomic resolution of TEM with the high precision manipulation of scanning probing microscopy (SPM), therefore it has the advantage of providing direct, real time and high resolution characterizations of the materials and processes. Here, I present our progresses in the investigations on the growth mechanism, structural manipulation and property measurements of nanostructures by using the in situ TEM probing technique. (1) Firstly, the growth processes of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) from various catalysts were studied by designing a “nanofurnace”, where catalyst nanoparticles (NPs) had been placed in a multiwall CNT “tubular furnace”, and a high temperature was obtained by Joule heating in the specimen chamber of a TEM. (2-4) Secondly, the mechanical properties of 1D and 2D structures were investigated and the mechanical behaviors were found to be dependent on the geometry, defects and loading conditions. (5-9)
