Abstract
A class of π-extended tetrathiafulvalene derivatives, namely tetrathiafulvalene vinylogoues (TTFVs),1 has been recently exploited by our group as versatile redox-active building blocks for the construction of functional conjugated polymers and macrocycles. Of great interest with regard to the TTFV unit is its redox-controlled pseudo-cis to trans conformational switching behavior. Taking advantage of this intriguing property, we have designed and synthesized a variety of TTFV-based π-conjugated polymers (e.g., 1) which show redox- and pH-responsiveness.2-4 These polymers can be used as efficient and selective dispersants to disperse single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) in organic solvents. Upon oxidation or protonation, the TTFV polymers change their conformations to break the polymer/SWNT assemblies, resulting in the release of pristine SWNTs from the suspension. By this way, we have achieved reversible dispersion and release of SWNTs under redox or pH control.2,3 We have also synthesized and characterized the properties of a series of TTFV-pyrene copolymers and shape-persistent macrocycles (e.g., 2). These macromolecules were found to show solvent-controlled aggregation properties5 and sufficient binding with nitrobenezene,6 suggesting potential application in electrochemical sensing for nitrobenzene explosives.
