摘要:Coal combustion provides cheap energy but creates corrosion problems due to the release of CO2 gas in power generation. Solutions include capture and storage of this reaction product. Oxyfuel combustion is an emerging technology enabling the generation of a flue gas suitable for sequestration. In this process, coal is burnt in a mixture of oxygen and recycled exhaust gas rather than in air, leading to a flue gas mainly composed of CO2 and H2O. Unfortunately, this gas mixture is highly reactive, producing not only oxidation but also carburisation. The high temperature lab at the School of Materials Science and Engineering, UNSW, has been working in CO2 corrosion at high temperature for more than 10 years, and obtained extensive results on mechanism understanding and strategy development to resist CO2 corrosion. This talk will present the group recent research results in this area, including grain boundary effect of chromia on carbon transportation using atom probe tomography, strategies for preventing CO2 corrosion by forming additional diffusion barriers (alloying with Mn, Si), surface/grain boundary modification by adding S in gas, and effect of H2O on CO2 corrosion.
