Selective Laser Melting Research at UWA

Prof Tim Sercombe
Head, School of Mechanical and Chemical Engineering
The University of Western Australia.

This seminar will outline some of our recent research in Selective Laser Melting at The University of Western Australia. It will be divided into three main areas

1. Anti-Bacterial Titanium
We have been working on the production of anti-bacterial titanium alloys produced by SLM. We have shown that the addition of element Ag or Cu to either cp-Ti or Ti-6Al-4V can result in the production of a homogenous structure. The properties are largely unaffected by the addition of the Ag, while the copper increases the strength and decreases the ductility

2. Aluminium.
We have processed Al-based metal matrix composites using a range of different ceramic additions. It appears that carbide-based particles are not suitable due to them breaking down. Nitrides, on the other hand, have been more successful. We have also been working on enhanced processing strategies for aluminium in order to improve the density of parts.

3. Metallic Glass
Using SLM, we have been able to produce fully amorphous Zr-based BMG parts. These parts have high density and also high compressive strength. In addition, by changing the processing parameters we can control the amount of crystallisation and therefore properties.
