Abstract:
This talk will highlight recent advances in in-situ neutron diffraction for engineering materials. This technique is used to quantify the globally averaged values in real time to correlate the microstructures with mechanical properties. I will first introduce the targets and methods used in this technique. Then I will discuss the in-situ tracking of microstructure evolution and transformation kinetics during material processing. As plastic deformation is caused by multi-scaled heterogeneous structures, I will further discuss recent studies of in-situ deformation in multi-phase steels. In-situ neutron techniques offer new opportunities in quantitative understanding of microstructure and deformation not only in steels but also in other structural materials as well.
