Abstract:
Solution processing enables the systematic study of carbon nanomaterial properties and drives technology development in this field. Using graphene oxide (GO) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as illustrative examples, this discussion explores key insights into solution processability. For instance, why does the aqueous dispersibility of GO films or powders vary significantly between batches? The critical roles of ionic contamination and drying conditions will be addressed, as these factors influence the design of various solution processing techniques, such as thin-film fabrication and monolayer coatings on diverse substrates, to ensure reproducibility and performance. In the case of CNTs, direct dispersion using weakly interacting solvents is highly desirable, as it simplifies processing and enables novel states of neat carbon nanotube-solvent systems. Some potential uses will also be highlighted, including rapid spray-coating methods for depositing CNTs onto surfaces and densification strategies to transform them into functional, solid-state materials. These advancements underscore the potential of solution-based approaches to unlock new applications.
