Abstract:
Founded in 1959, the Institute of Corrosion (ICorr) is the UK’s leading professional body dedicated to advancing corrosion science and engineering. With a global membership, ICorr offers professional development, accreditation, training, certification, and hosts a wide range of events for corrosion professionals. This presentation will provide an overview of ICorr’s vision, values, organisational structure, key activities, membership benefits, development pathways, and international partnerships—highlighting its pivotal role in promoting excellence in corrosion control and asset integrity worldwide.

Corrosion Management in Oil and Gas Production Facilities from a UK Operator’s Perspective

Abstract:

Corrosion remains a critical and ongoing challenge to the reliability and safety of oil and gas infrastructure - especially in offshore and marine environments, where equipment and pipelines are continuously exposed to harsh operating conditions and corrosive substances. If not properly managed, corrosion can lead to unexpected equipment failures, operational disruptions, and serious health, safety, and environmental (HSE) incidents.

This presentation is built on over 17 years of practical experience in materials engineering, corrosion prevention, and asset integrity management in the oil and gas industry. It will provide a practical overview of corrosion fundamentals, key corrosion mechanisms relevant to field operations, and the most common corrosion-related problems encountered during equipment lifecycle.

Special attention will be given to field-proven corrosion management techniques used by operators in the UK, including effective material selection, use of corrosion inhibitors, cathodic protection systems, inspection and monitoring practices, and predictive maintenance strategies.

This session is designed to support engineers, maintenance teams,and asset integrity professionals working in various industrial sectors. It will offer practical guidance on how to apply corrosion control principles to real-world operations - helping extend asset life, reduce downtime, and maintain safe, cost-effective performance in demanding service environments.

Dr. Yunnan Gao is the current President of the Institute of Corrosion (ICorr) in the UK—the first Chinese president in the organisation’s history since its founding in 1959. He previously served as Vice President from November 2022 to November 2024 and has been an active member of the ICorr Aberdeen Branch Committee for over 11 years. During this time,he held the position of Chair twice,playing a key role in strengthening and expanding the branch.

Dr. Gao earned his BEng in Materials and Metallurgy from Northeastern University,China (1996–2001). In 2003,he moved to the UK to pursue MSc and PhD degrees in materials and corrosion at Loughborough University. Since completing his PhD in March 2008,he has gained over 17 years of experience in the energy sector,both in the UK and internationally.

He has worked for several leading energy and technical service companies,including Atkins,BP,DNV GL,Lloyd’s Register,Repsol Sinopec,Saipem,and Stork,with a focus on asset integrity and corrosion management. Currently,Dr. Gao is based in Sunbury,UK,working as a corrosion specialist for BP.

Throughout his career, Dr. Gao has developed deep theoretical and practical expertise in materials engineering, corrosion control, and asset integrity management—particularly in corrosion mechanisms, monitoring, inspection technologies, and their industrial applications. He has led and delivered numerous major projects across the full lifecycle of oil and gas production facilities, from concept design to operations. His work includes the production of thousands of technical reports, many of which are high-level publications, and he has presented extensively at international conferences and symposia.

Dr. Gao is a UK Chartered Engineer (CEng),Chartered Scientist (CSci),Fellow of the Institute of Corrosion (FICorr),Fellow of the Institute of Materials,Minerals and Mining (FIMMM),and an AMPP Certified Corrosion Specialist.
